This ancient city was a formerly a part of Si Khottrabun Empire, on the left bank of the Mekhong River. The historical records tell that when King Rama I ruled Vientiane, the area was named "Maruka Nakhon". It was later renamed to "Nakhon Phanom", following to the location that is among many hills and mountains. |
Besides the river of ancient culture, there are many interesting attractions, traditions, and arts. Phra That Phanom, the most sacred and ancient religious monument of the Northeast, is venerated by both Thais and Laotian. Although it partially collapsed some time ago, it has since been restored to its glory.
