In Ayuthaya period, Phichai and Swangkha Buri were important garrison town as the frontier of Ayuthaya. The province was firstly a "Bang Pho Tha It village, a part of Phichai. The village was properous on the right bank of Nan River. It has trading piers. King Rama 5 upgraded it to be "Utaradit" city", meaning to the northern pier. The city was more properous than Phichai, so Phichai became a part of Utaradit. |
The "Ban Pho Tha It", trading port town, was a very fast prosperous city. So, it was upgraded and renamed to be the "Uttaradit" city by King Rama V. Many years later, Uttaradit was upgraded to be a province and Phichai became an Amphoe of the province.
