Phayao is an ancient city, aged over 900 years, of Lanna Thai Kingdom. It was formerly called "Phu Kam Yao" or "Pha Yao" which was established by King Khun Si Chom Tham of the Lua Chakarat Hiran dynasty of Chiang San city. It was renamed to Phayao in Sukhothai period and was established as a province in 1977.
